Science at Bush Hill Park

At Bush Hill Park, we recognise the importance of science in developing children’s understanding of the world around them. Our principal aims are to provide all children with positive and enjoyable scientific experiences, and to deliver the knowledge, skills, and motivation to allow them to make good progress. We intend for our pupils to develop an appreciation of the value of science in their everyday lives, and for them to be able to engage with scientific opportunities and experiences they encounter now and in the future.

We aim to increase pupils’ knowledge and understanding of our world, and to enable every child the opportunity to develop skills associated with Science as a process of enquiry. It will develop the natural curiosity of the child, encourage respect for living organisms and the physical environment and provide opportunities for critical evaluation of evidence. We have been building a Science curriculum which develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge whilst enabling children to become enquiry-based learners.

In order to achieve this, the primary emphasis of our Science lessons is to foster children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for scientific concepts. In lessons, we motivate pupils to ask questions, and open paths of enquiries so that they can explore and find answers. Children are consistently exposed to high-level scientific vocabulary throughout lessons. We also aim to provide children with high-quality scientific experiences outside the classroom to further enrich their learning. Alongside this, we expect children to develop a strong scientific understanding of the topics covered through the acquisition of key knowledge and the application of skills, as identified in the National Curriculum Programme of Study. This understanding is built on as pupils progress through primary school, ensuring that they will have a solid foundation for the study of science in the post-primary setting.

We do this through:

  • A clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum where teaching and learning shows progression across all key stages within the strands of Science.
  • CPD to develop teacher’s strength of planning and assessment in Science.
  • Children have access to key language and meanings in order to understand and readily apply to their written, mathematical and verbal communication of their skills.
  • Children will use a range of resources to develop their knowledge and understanding that is integral to their learning and develop their understanding of working scientifically.
  • Clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum where teaching and learning plans for practical investigative opportunities within Science lessons.
  • Children will reflect on previous learning and cross curricular links will be made wherever possible.
  • Children will be able to build on prior knowledge and link ideas together, enabling them to question and become enquiry-based learners.
  • Attainment will be assessed each half term through related topic assessment tasks.
  • Where applicable links to Science will be made to develop the children’s topical learning.
